Nvidia 6G AI efforts gained significant industry backing at MWC 2026 in Barcelona, as the chipmaker assembled a coalition of major telecom operators and technology vendors to shape the design of next-generation wireless networks.
BT Group, Deutsche Telekom, SK Telecom, SoftBank Corp, and T-Mobile US signed up to the initiative. Nvidia said the effort aims to ensure 6G networks maintain progress in openness and resilience established during the 5G era.
Vendors and Standards Bodies Join the Coalition
Ericsson, Nokia, Booz Allen, and Cisco also joined the initiative. In addition, the Open Centralised Unit Distributed Unit (OCUDU) Ecosystem Foundation, a newly launched Linux Forum initiative focused on AI-RAN innovations, is participating in the effort.
Nvidia 6G AI by Design: The Core Argument
Nvidia argues that artificial intelligence must be embedded in 6G networks by design rather than added later. The company stated that 6G would exceed the voice and data parameters of 5G by providing connectivity for “billions of autonomous machines, vehicles, sensors and robots.”

Operator Leaders Outline Expected Benefits
Operator executives described specific goals for the initiative. BT CEO Allison Kirkby said the effort could simplify 6G development. Deutsche Telekom chief Tim Hoettges highlighted potential customer experience improvements, while SK Telecom President and CEO Jung Jai-hun said the initiative aligns with the operator’s broader transformation plans.

Industry Context and Future Outlook
The initiative reflects a broader industry push to define 6G standards before formal standardization processes conclude. Nvidia’s involvement signals the growing role of semiconductor and AI platform companies in shaping telecommunications infrastructure, a domain traditionally led by dedicated network equipment vendors.
The OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation’s participation also underscores the open-source community’s intent to influence AI-native radio access network architecture from an early stage. Formal 6G deployments are not expected before the early 2030s, leaving significant time for the coalition’s technical positions to evolve.
