The OpenAI Astral acquisition, announced on March 9, 2026, will bring widely used open source Python tools into OpenAI’s Codex platform, the company said. The deal remains subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. Until closing, OpenAI and Astral will continue to operate as separate, independent companies.
Codex Records Strong Growth Ahead of OpenAI Astral Acquisition
OpenAI’s Codex platform has recorded 3x user growth and a 5x usage increase since the start of 2026. The platform currently serves over 2 million weekly active users. OpenAI said the acquisition aims to accelerate Codex’s development beyond code generation and toward full participation in the software development lifecycle.
Astral’s Open Source Tools and Their Role
Astral has developed three widely adopted open source Python tools that power millions of developer workflows. These tools address distinct stages of the development process. OpenAI said it plans to support these open source products after the deal closes.
- uv: simplifies dependency and environment management
- Ruff: provides fast linting and formatting
- ty: enforces type safety across codebases
Statements From Both Companies
“Astral has always focused on building tools that transform how developers work with Python—helping them ship better software, faster. As part of Codex, we’ll continue evolving our open source tools to push the frontier of software development.”
Charlie Marsh, Founder & CEO, Astral
“Astral’s tools are used by millions of Python developers. By bringing their expertise and ecosystem to OpenAI, we’re accelerating our vision for Codex as the agent most capable of working across the entire software developer lifecycle.”
Thibault Sottiaux, Codex Lead, OpenAI
Future Integration Plans for Python Development
After closing, the Astral team will join the Codex team at OpenAI. The company said it will explore deeper integrations that allow artificial intelligence agents to interact more directly with tools developers already use. OpenAI described its broader goal as building AI systems that help people create and build faster.
Python has grown into one of the most widely used languages in modern software development, supporting applications in data science, backend systems, and developer infrastructure. Moreover, Astral’s tools already occupy a central role in that ecosystem, making the integration a logical extension of Codex’s existing capabilities. Consequently, the acquisition positions OpenAI to offer a more complete development environment for Python developers worldwide.
