During the 1447 AH Hajj season, the Sawaher platform demonstrated technical operations to manage pilgrim crowds at the holy sites. The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) operated the system in partnership with the Ministry of Interior. This deployment utilized artificial intelligence to monitor high-density areas.
Technical Infrastructure of the Sawaher Platform
The system integrated more than 5,000 cameras across 80 distinct locations in the holy sites. Specifically, these cameras connected directly to advanced operations rooms to provide continuous monitoring. Meanwhile, more than 600 operators managed the incoming feeds to maintain security at key access points. These operators worked in shifts to ensure round-the-clock coverage.
To process the visual data, the system used 31 data dashboards and 16 algorithms. These tools allowed operators to analyze real-time data on crowd movement and human flows. Consequently, security teams could track pilgrim numbers and identify areas experiencing high density. This analytical capability prevented overcrowding at major bottlenecks.
Real-Time Data Analysis
The Sawaher platform provided real-time analytics to support decision-making processes during the annual pilgrimage. Moreover, by analyzing human flows, the system helped authorities make rapid decisions based on live data. As a result, field teams could respond to changing conditions immediately.
In addition, the technology assisted in counting pilgrims accurately at various entry and exit points. This capability helped mitigate congestion in crowded pathways.
