Sony has announced the development of the Sony RIALTO 65, a new 65mm format image sensor block designed for the VENICE 2 digital cinema camera.

The company plans to release the new system in the first half of 2027 to expand the capabilities of its existing cinema platform. Meanwhile, the system preserves full compatibility with the existing VENICE 2 camera bodies, allowing production teams to use their current hardware setups without requiring a complete system replacement.

Technical Specifications of the Sony RIALTO 65

The Sony RIALTO 65 features a light-receiving area that is approximately 2.2 times larger than a standard full-frame image sensor. This physical size allows cinematographers to achieve a shallow depth of field and a wider sense of scale in their visual compositions. Specifically, the sensor measures approximately 64.60 mm diagonally, with a width of 53.75 mm and a height of 35.83 mm.

It utilizes a 3:2 aspect ratio and supports 9.6K 3:2 open gate recording. Furthermore, the unit supports multiple readout modes to ensure compatibility with various 65mm format lenses, including those with narrower image circles.

Modular Design and Camera Compatibility

The new sensor block can be mounted directly to the VENICE 2 camera body. Alternatively, users can separate it from the body using a dedicated cable, which is similar to the setup used in the VENICE Extension System. This modular configuration provides camera operators with increased mobility during production.

Large Format Cinematic Capabilities

Sony is exhibiting the under-development Sony RIALTO 65 at the Cine Gear Expo in Los Angeles, California, starting June 5, 2026. This exhibition allows industry professionals to view the technical specifications of the upcoming hardware ahead of its commercial launch.
