Massive Environmental Impact Threatens Tech Growth

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and quantum computing has created a substantial environmental footprint. Over 1 trillion chips are sold annually, powering smartphones, cars, and televisions, while more than 11,000 data centres operate globally with demand expected to rise 19-22% annually through 2030.

The scale of resource consumption is staggering: semiconductor manufacturing alone uses over 1 trillion litres of water annually, global data centres consume more than 60 gigawatts of power—exceeding California’s peak electricity demand—and hardware production generates more than 60 billion kilogrammes of e-waste yearly, with less than 25% currently recycled.

The Nature Positive: Role of the Technology Sector report, developed with Oliver Wyman, identifies where the $800 billion opportunity lies. Over half comes from upstream energy and extractives activities, including expanding renewable power, improving resource recovery, and advancing circular manufacturing of electronics.

Specific innovations like liquid cooling in data centers can reduce emissions by up to 21%, while circular material recovery initiatives achieve up to 95% emission reductions compared to traditional mining.

With the tech sector currently responsible for 4% of global energy use and facing increasing community and regulatory scrutiny over data centre projects, companies that prioritize sustainability will gain competitive advantages through stronger stakeholder support, greater environmental resilience, and alignment with customer and investor expectations.
