Broadcom and Samsung Electronics have launched a new Wi-Fi 8 FWA platform designed to integrate 5G and Wi-Fi 8 technologies for home broadband. The reference design aims to provide mass-market equipment with enhanced connectivity options.

Technical Specifications of the New Platform

The platform combines Broadcom’s BCM6776 Wi-Fi 8 system-on-chip (SoC) and Samsung’s B1320 5G modem. This hardware configuration is compatible with 3GPP Release-17 and the emerging Wi-Fi 8 IEEE 802.11bn standard. Meanwhile, the system supports new radio and narrowband non-terrestrial network (NTN) bands to improve connection reliability, giving operators a degree of connectivity resilience previously unavailable in consumer-grade hardware.

Samsung’s B1320 is a 5nm chipset that delivers 5G data rates of 3.4Gb/s in the downlink and 1.2Gb/s in the uplink. In addition, Broadcom’s BCM6776 operates as a tri-band, single-chip product. It covers the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands simultaneously using a quad-core Arm network processor and an integrated multi-gigabit physical layer.

Power Efficiency and OEM Benefits of the Wi-Fi 8 FWA platform

The integrated design reduces active power consumption by 50% compared to Broadcom’s previous generation of hardware. Consequently, the combination of the 5G modem and Wi-Fi 8 radio into a single reference design lowers the bill-of-materials for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). It also simplifies the physical board design for manufacturing partners.

Humax Networks and WNC have already started producing next-generation gateways based on this Wi-Fi 8 FWA platform to meet market demand. Currently, global telecommunications operators are conducting trials of the new hardware in various operational environments.
