Smart hospital rooms powered by artificial intelligence are coming to all 25 hospitals in the WVU Health System, following the system’s selection of hellocare.ai as its enterprise platform provider. The deployment will cover more than 3,000 beds across West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
The WVU Health System is the clinical and academic health enterprise of West Virginia University and the state’s largest private employer. Founded in 1996, the system employs more than 35,000 staff and operates over 3,260 beds across four states.
Smart Hospital Rooms to Cover Core Virtual Care Functions
The hellocare.ai platform will deliver bed-level virtual care capabilities across the network. Core functions include AI-supported virtual nursing, virtual medical rounds, telemedicine services, and AI-powered virtual patient monitoring. The platform integrates fully with the Epic electronic health record system.
Select hospitals will also deploy additional modules, including digital whiteboards, digital door signage, and patient information and entertainment systems. All modules connect within a single unified platform.

One of the Region’s Largest Enterprise Deployments
WVU Health System describes this initiative as one of the most comprehensive enterprise deployments of AI-powered smart hospital room technology in the region. The system includes specialized institutes covering cancer care, critical care, cardiovascular medicine, ophthalmology, and neuroscience, and serves more than 2,500 students through its health sciences programs.
The health technology deployment builds on WVU’s academic medical history, which dates to the university’s first medical education programs in 1869. The WVU School of Medicine grew into a full four-year program by 1960 and today operates colleges of medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and public health.
