The 5G capability era has arrived, according to a new intelligence brief from GSMA Intelligence published April 7, 2026. Global 5G connections surpassed 2.7 billion by the end of 2025, making it the fastest-growing mobile technology on record. Yet the same data shows that raw coverage numbers now tell only part of the story.
The GSMA Intelligence 5G Connectivity Index, which benchmarks 46 markets across infrastructure and services dimensions, found that global 5G performance is diverging sharply. Most markets have improved on basic indicators, but only a small group is advancing toward the advanced capabilities that define the next phase of connectivity.
Where the 5G Capability Era Leaders Stand
The Index identifies a clear tier of high performers: GCC states, Nordic countries, developed Asia Pacific markets, China, and the United States. These markets score strongly across both infrastructure and services. Most other markets remain in early deployment models, limiting what their networks can support and the economic value they can capture.
Peter Jarich, head of GSMA Intelligence, said the industry is moving beyond the early coverage and capacity phase into a period where quality, consistency, and depth of deployment matter as much as geographic reach. Markets that look similar on coverage and adoption differ significantly on standalone (SA) 5G, uplink performance, latency, network consistency, 5G-Advanced readiness, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), IoT, and reduced capability (RedCap) development.
Three Structural Shifts Defining 5G Maturity
The 2026 State of 5G report highlights three findings that increasingly determine whether markets can translate deployment progress into economic value. First, the uplink revolution: AI-driven services, from real-time video analytics to industrial robotics, require sustained uplink speeds of up to 100 Mb/s alongside low latency. Early non-standalone (NSA) networks were not designed to meet these requirements reliably, while SA 5G delivers materially stronger uplink performance.
Second, the rise of physical AI. In leading markets, 5G is becoming the connective layer for machines, supporting sensors, cameras, robots, and industrial systems. Capabilities such as IoT, RedCap, and early 5G-Advanced features including sensing and positioning are transforming 5G into a platform for industrial automation across manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare. However, the Index shows these capabilities remain highly concentrated in a small number of markets.
Third, the monetisation challenge. Despite strong growth in mobile data traffic, recurring mobile revenues remain flat in most markets, typically below 5 percent annual growth. Only China, the GCC states, and the United States have begun to diverge from this pattern, by aligning high-tier SA 5G infrastructure with enterprise digital transformation, FWA, and differentiated service models.
Affordability Improves, but Gaps Persist
The report notes that affordability has improved significantly. Entry-level 5G devices are cheaper, effective prices per gigabyte have fallen, and more consumers can access high-capacity plans. Crucially, the data shows improved affordability does not undermine monetisation. Where operators can differentiate service quality through speed, reliability, or guaranteed performance, lower prices expand the addressable market while advanced capability enables greater value capture.
A persistent usage gap, however, means many users remain under-engaged despite having coverage and compatible devices. Limited digital skills, lack of relevant content, and concerns around trust and cybersecurity all contribute. Closing this gap requires strengthening digital literacy, enabling locally relevant services, and building user trust, the report states.
Revenue Growth Requires More Than Network Investment
The report concludes that technology alone is not sufficient for revenue growth. Operators need regulatory flexibility, tariff differentiation, and the ability to price based on experience. Without mechanisms such as network slicing, deterministic connectivity, or experience-based pricing, operators risk building larger networks without capturing proportional value.

The broader conclusion from the Index is structural. Advanced 5G capabilities, including SA, 5G-Advanced, consistent performance, FWA, IoT, and RedCap, are becoming the infrastructure base of the next connectivity phase, much as 4G underpinned the mobile internet economy. Markets that continue to compete primarily on coverage risk falling behind, even where 5G appears mature on the surface.
