A comprehensive study by Coursera reveals that 91% of students and educators in Saudi Arabia affirm the positive impact of AI in higher education, marking a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s digital transformation journey. The research, conducted in partnership with Censuswide, highlights extensive AI integration across academic institutions while identifying critical areas requiring strategic development.

Widespread AI Adoption Transforms Learning Outcomes

The nationwide survey, part of a five-country analysis including Mexico, India, the USA, and the UK, demonstrates that AI in higher education Saudi Arabia has become deeply embedded in academic routines. An impressive 86% of students report improved grades since incorporating AI tools into their studies, with 41% describing the impact as “very positive.”

Students are leveraging AI across multiple learning stages, from content creation and research to exam preparation. Nearly half use AI for exam revision (44%) and generating practice tests (42%), while 41% rely on it for writing assignments and supporting research activities. Additionally, 38% use AI for time management, reflecting its growing role in helping students organize their studies more effectively.

Educators also recognize significant benefits, with 36% reporting that AI reduces time spent on administrative tasks, allowing greater one-to-one student interaction. Other advantages include increased productivity and efficiency (33%), reduced human error in marking and grading, and real-time feedback capabilities (31%).

Need for Stronger Frameworks and AI Literacy

Despite widespread adoption, 77% of respondents recognize the need for higher education systems to evolve their frameworks to fully integrate AI responsibly. Key areas requiring attention include strengthening academic integrity (26%), developing clearer data privacy approaches (33%), and preserving the long-term value of degrees (24%).

The study reveals an interesting dynamic: while 85% acknowledge AI supports exam preparation, 79% perceive that using AI for university work raises academic integrity questions. The data shows 78% of students rely on AI to complete between 21% and 70% of their academic work, and 81% believe AI will make many degrees obsolete within a decade.

Respondents emphasized priorities requiring stronger safeguards, including protecting human interaction and interpersonal skills (33%), maintaining rigorous quality control in marking and grading (33%), establishing guidelines to prevent plagiarism (31%), addressing potential bias (27%), and preparing for shifts in future job markets (23%).

The findings underscore an urgent need for universities to embed AI literacy and ethical frameworks to responsibly harness AI’s potential, ensuring collaboration across the education ecosystem helps students and educators develop the skills and judgment needed to use these tools effectively.
