Google started rolling out the Android 17 update to its Pixel devices yesterday, bringing new multitasking tools and security upgrades.
The initial release became available on June 16, 2026, with other hardware brands scheduled to receive the software throughout the year. Notably, some of the major artificial intelligence features will not arrive for another few months.
A new multitasking tool called Bubbles allows users to collapse any application into a floating window on the screen. These windows can be stacked, dragged, and resized to help users reference maps or write notes during active calls. On foldable devices and large screens, these bubbles dock in a dedicated bar at the bottom.
Screen recording now features a dedicated toolbar alongside a new tool called Screen Reactions. This feature allows users to record themselves via the selfie camera while capturing their phone screens. According to reports, this tool aims to reduce user reliance on third-party video editing applications.
Security Enhancements in Android 17 update
Google has introduced several privacy controls to protect user data within the Android 17 update. Users can now grant applications one-time location access instead of permanent permissions. Furthermore, the system allows users to share specific contacts rather than their entire address book.
Lost Mode now requires biometric authentication alongside a PIN to prevent unauthorized access to missing devices. Additionally, the Live Threat Detection system has been upgraded to block a wider range of suspicious applications and scams. Google also reduced the number of allowed PIN attempts to stop brute-force entry.
Gaming and Wearable Upgrades
For foldable devices, the update introduces a dedicated gaming mode with an optimized 50/50 screen layout. This layout places the game view on top and a dynamic gamepad on the bottom half. Notably, Google reduced frame drops and improved memory cleanup for high-definition gaming.
The company is also updating Wear OS 7 to improve battery life and connectivity with smart glasses. This wearable update will include multi-step application automations to improve the overall user experience.
Future Feature Rollouts
Many advanced features of the Android 17 update will arrive later this year. Features such as Gemini Intelligence, redesigned emojis, and smarter voice dictation will launch in the coming months. These tools will debut first on the Pixel 11 series and upcoming Samsung devices.
Competitive Mobile Market
The release of this software comes one week after Apple unveiled its own upcoming intelligence and assistant improvements. This timing highlights the ongoing competition between the two major mobile platforms.
