Saudi Arabia deployed its first carbon-neutral telecom towers during the LEAP 2026 conference in Riyadh, marking a new operational phase for sustainable digital infrastructure in the Kingdom. The initiative was enabled by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission in collaboration with mobile operator Zain Saudi Arabia and technology provider Huawei. Energy Efficiency of Carbon-Neutral Telecom Towers
The newly deployed EcoFusion installation integrates renewable power sources alongside automated power management systems to optimize operational load. Specifically, the technical design reduces overall energy consumption by up to 33.1%, while supplemental clean energy integration delivers an added 8% reduction. Consequently, the combined systems allow the facility to lower total carbon dioxide emissions by up to 40% compared to standard base stations across the telecom sector.
Environmental Impact and Scale Projections
Project estimates indicate that applying the EcoFusion design to 2,000 network sites annually would eliminate 31,396 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions each year. In environmental terms, this reduction matches the carbon absorption capacity of roughly 1.5 million trees planted over the same period. Furthermore, the initiative reflects regulatory goals established during LEAP 2024, when the Commission signed an initial memorandum of understanding with Huawei to promote circular economy principles.

Corporate Sustainability and Climate Disclosures
The installation of carbon-neutral telecom towers aligns with earlier environmental programs carried out by the operator, including wireless connectivity projects designed to preserve marine ecosystems around the Farasan Islands. Moreover, the telecommunications provider secured an “A” rating for institutional climate action disclosures in the annual report published by the Carbon Disclosure Project. In addition, network operators are expanding power-efficient equipment to support connected hardware and smart devices throughout national coverage zones.
Future Network Deployment Plans
The Commission and its industry partners plan to extend clean energy infrastructure across urban and rural sites to lower the environmental footprint of digital communications. As a result, network infrastructure across Saudi Arabia is transitioning toward high-capacity 5G Advanced standards while maintaining strict compliance with national sustainability targets under Saudi Vision 2030.
