A new report reveals that Google AI Overviews now appear in 43% of global search queries, marking a significant shift in online information retrieval.

This data represents a substantial increase from last year when the feature appeared in only 15% of searches. According to a report by TechCrunch, which cited data from market intelligence firm Similarweb, the feature is rapidly changing how users interact with the web.

The Rise of Google AI Overviews

The rapid expansion of Google AI Overviews indicates that generative answers are becoming a standard part of the search experience. What began as an experimental layer has transitioned into an integrated component of the search journey. Users are frequently directed to these automated summaries, where they can continue their queries using a conversational interface.

Meanwhile, visits to this conversational mode grew from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million by May 2026. This growth highlights a broader transition in user behavior. The traditional list of blue links is increasingly replaced by direct answers sourced from indexed websites.

Shifting Search Habits and User Behavior

The integration of generative tools in apps & software platforms is altering how people formulate queries. Data shows that the average length of search queries has increased over the past year. This change suggests that users are replacing short keywords with longer, natural sentences.

Consequently, users are spending more time directly on the search platform. Instead of using the search engine as a quick gateway to other websites, they use it as a final destination. This shift keeps users within the platform’s environment for longer periods.

Impact on Web Publishers and Traffic

This transition has created challenges for digital publishers who rely on search engines for referral traffic, impacting the digital economy & business sector. Many publishers are experiencing a decline in clicks because Google AI Overviews provide answers directly on the search page. Although citations within these summaries have increased fivefold over the past year, they do not always result in user clicks.

To address this, some technology infrastructure companies have introduced tools to help publishers. For instance, Cloudflare recently launched features that allow websites to block automated crawlers unless operators pay for content access. This development reflects growing tension between content creators and search platforms.

The Evolving Search Engine Destination

The trend toward automated answers is also visible in other platforms. For example, only 6.8% of desktop queries on ChatGPT included citations as of May 2026. However, some sectors like travel, retail, and sports see higher citation rates.

There are signs that search updates can alter these patterns. A recent update to ChatGPT in May 2026 caused desktop referrals to rise from 25% to nearly 60%. This indicates that prominent link placement can still drive traffic to external websites. Nevertheless, the broader trend toward search engines acting as destinations remains strong.
