The McLaren McL 6GT concept car debuted at the 2026 Monterey Car Week, previewing an upcoming production supercar planned for release in 2028. McLaren Automotive stated that the new vehicle draws direct inspiration from the historic M6GT developed by company founder Bruce McLaren. In addition, the design connects the company’s motorsport heritage with modern mechanical engineering.
Inspired by Heritage
The vehicle features styling inspired by 1960s sports prototype racing cars. Specifically, the proportions sit low and wide with a low nose, echoing the stance of the M6A Can-Am racer. The body panels flow into a Kammback tail, creating a continuous aerodynamic form where the roof merges into the rear deck. Bruce McLaren’s original registration plate appears as a graphic treatment, and his signature is placed in the engine bay alongside the Speedy Kiwi logo on the fuel filler cap.
Engineering Philosophy of the McLaren McL 6GT
Inside the cockpit, the McLaren McL 6GT incorporates knurled machined aluminium controls and ergonomic switchgear inspired by the original car. The interior integrates boxed quilting alongside a modern digital instrument cluster designed for clarity. Exposed gloss carbon fibre surfaces throughout the cabin reflect the brand’s racing heritage while reducing total weight.

Manual Drivetrain and Mechanical Focus
The vehicle uses a V8 internal combustion engine paired with a manual transmission that delivers power exclusively to the rear wheels. Consequently, this marks the first manual gearbox offered in a McLaren road model since the McLaren F1 in 1992. Hydraulic steering and physical switchgear emphasize tactile feedback, contrasting with the automated electronic systems commonly found in modern automotive engineering.
Carbon Fibre Construction and Production
A lightweight carbon-fibre monocoque and full carbon-fibre bodywork form the structural foundation of the vehicle. This material selection optimizes the power-to-weight ratio for track and road performance. The production version of the McLaren McL 6GT is scheduled for release in 2028, establishing an exclusive line of supercars positioned outside the core vehicle portfolio.
