The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards have revealed the shortlist for the 2026 edition, featuring films from filmmakers representing over 162 countries and territories worldwide. The fourth edition of the awards received submissions from more than 8,400 filmmakers spanning five categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Animation, Student, and Future Format.
Shortlisted filmmakers will participate in an exclusive program at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City from June 8-11. The four-day immersive experience includes interactive sessions and masterclasses led by Sony Pictures executives covering production, talent deals, animation techniques, soundtracking, and emerging technologies. A gala ceremony on June 11 will announce category winners, who receive cash prizes and Sony Digital Imaging equipment.
Diverse Global Perspectives
The 2026 shortlist spans continents with stories rooted in lived experience. Featured films include a portrait of women freedivers off Tamil Nadu risking their lives collecting seaweed, an ecologist in the Carpathian mountains tending to water buffalo and ancient horse breeds, and a newly qualified teacher navigating her first year in a South London classroom. Additional submissions follow a Welsh shepherd targeted by community suspicion after his flock remains untouched when others disappear, a 90-year-old French pianist preparing for his final concert, and three North Korean defectors providing testimony about displacement and escape.
Judging Panel and Recognition
The 2026 jury includes Golden Globe-nominated director Will Gluck (Anyone But You, Peter Rabbit, Easy A); acclaimed producer Rachel O’Connor, President of Film and Television at Pascal Pictures (Challengers, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Little Women); animation co-director Adam Rosette (GOAT, The Wild Robot, Orion and the Dark); and director Justin Chadwick (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, The Other Boleyn Girl), who returns as jury chair for the fourth consecutive year.

Category Overview and Entries
The Fiction category rewards narrative-led submissions with original fictional stories. Ten films were shortlisted, including Eduardo Braun Costa’s The Liars, which follows a teenage boy convincing a stranger to pose as their father after his younger brother is caught stealing, and Jen Nee Lim’s Buah (Fruit), set in a place where abortion is illegal.
Non-Fiction category entries include documentary and factual content such as Greeshma Sathiaraj’s Mermaids of Mannar, featuring women freedivers off Tamil Nadu, and Hélène Sevaux’s Four Hands, profiling 90-year-old pianist Philippe Entremont preparing for his final concert. The Animation category embraces stop-motion, motion graphics, computer animation, and experimental techniques across five shortlisted submissions.
The Student category rewards filmmakers studying film at registered institutions worldwide. Five entries were selected, including Ana A. Alpizar’s Norheimsund from New York University and Frederik Bösing, Terry Kraatz, and Vera Kayh’s Once in a Blue Moon from Filmakademie Baden Wuerttemberg.
Future Format Winner and Program Details
The Future Format competition challenges filmmakers to respond to technical briefs exploring creative possibilities in storytelling. This year’s challenge focused on vertical viewing with a 9:16 aspect ratio. Innocent Yama Lamido from Nigeria won with Creating Without Permission, described as a meditation on creation and spaces between moments. Lamido receives Sony Digital Imaging equipment and an invitation to join the June program at Sony Pictures Studios.
