Huawei optical access network technology took center stage at Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, where the company unveiled its Next Generation Fixed Access Network (FAN) solution on March 7, 2026. The solution combines artificial intelligence and all-optical technologies to build core network capabilities for internet service providers worldwide.
The launch took place during an ISP industry forum hosted by Huawei under the theme “AI Shapes the ISP Future, Driving Growth in B2C and B2B Tracks.” The event brought together global ISP operators to discuss the role of AI in reshaping broadband infrastructure and service delivery.
York Yue Outlines AI’s Role in ISP Strategy
York Yue, Vice President of Huawei and CEO of the ISP and Media Business Unit, said in his opening remarks that by 2025, AI had moved from concept to large-scale deployment. “Internally, it drives network automation, intelligence, and operational efficiency,” Yue said. “Externally, it enables higher-value B2B services and new monetization models.” Yue stated that ISPs must embed AI into their core strategy to sustain growth in the smart world.
Huawei Optical Access Network Features for Smart Homes
The Next Generation FAN solution targets smart home applications including cloud gaming, 8K UHD video streaming, and remote conferencing. The solution is built on a device-edge-cloud coordinated architecture and delivers intelligent scheduling, connectivity, services, and operations and maintenance capabilities.
For home connectivity, the solution uses Huawei’s OptiXstar EG series Optical Network Units to provide three capabilities. First, smart connectivity enables automatic frequency band switching and Wi-Fi 7 speeds exceeding 2,000 Mbps, delivering full-home coverage. Second, smart services integrate Wi-Fi networks with AI algorithms to protect home security and identify indoor conditions. Third, smart operations and maintenance capabilities allow hardware to detect and correct faults automatically for more stable network performance.
For home service awareness, the solution uses MA5800T series Optical Line Terminals. These units feature AI-based traffic management and provide dedicated network paths for different smart services with customized service-level agreement guarantees. This supports reliable performance across healthcare, entertainment, and remote meeting scenarios.
AI Integration Across Broadband and Enterprise Networks
Huang Dashuan, Chief Technology Officer of ICT Solution Marketing and Sales Management at Huawei, said AI is reshaping the ISP industry and driving service growth in both B2C and B2B segments. “AI terminals will become mainstream by 2030,” Huang said. “With multimodal capabilities, these networks will help enterprises reduce costs and improve efficiency, while intelligent and flexible networks will significantly enhance operations, maintenance efficiency, and user experience.”
